If you have had your passport stolen are in need of information and advice ASAP- skip straight to the checklist below!

If you’re reading this as a preventative measure, or to make yourself feel better after the fact- just keep reading my ramblings whilst I set the scene!

So,

You’re having the overseas trip of a lifetime. You’re ticking off ALL the bucket list items. You’re eating ALL the foods. Swimming at ALL the beaches. Your friends back home are green with envy. Some have even un-followed you on Social Media because your just HAVING TOO MUCH DAMN FUN.

And then the unthinkable happens. You realise your passport and wallet containing all your bankcards are gone. You scramble through your remaining belongings trying desperately to prove yourself wrong. You retrace your steps, and annoy everyone in the vicinity begging them to help you look for what you know in your heart is gone. Maybe you even force your boyfriend to look through rubbish bins in the hopes of finding it (yep I’ve done this to Shab).

Whether it is a sneaky under-the-radar-theft, or a brazen mugging (I hope that never happens to you!) the results are the same. You are stranded thousands of miles away from home with no passport, and maybe no money. Get our awesome checklist emailed straight to your inbox when you subscribe, so you can avoid losing your shit both literally and figuratively!

What you have to do from here will differ slightly depending on where you are, and where you are from.

  • Keep calm. This is not the end of the world! It is a major inconvenience though. You have your health, you are safe, you just need to get through some paperwork and everything will be OK.
  • An emergency passport can be issued in as little as ONE BUSINESS DAY, so your travel plans don’t need to be interrupted too much. If you happen to miss a flight, remember this can be claimed on Travel Insurance.
  • If your passport is stolen and you would like to claim the replacement fees and trip interruption costs on your Travel Insurance, you will need to FILE A POLICE REPORT about the incident.
  • You are going to need to FIND YOUR NEAREST EMBASSY or CONSULATE. For example, an Australian in Bali will need to visit the Australian Embassy in Denpasar.
  • Make sure you have enough funds to cover the cost of an emergency passport. This can be quite expensive, check the links below to confirm these fees for your situation.
  • Dig out those spare PASSPORT PHOTOS I told you to take with you in our checklist you already got emailed to yourself! If you don’t have any passport photo’s you will need to find somewhere that can take some of you. Ring your closest embassy and ask where they recommend. If you are stuck without a phone ask your hotel, or a taxi driver.

What I wish we knew when it happened to us:

If you are in the same place for an extended period, you can get a replacement passport issued whilst overseas. Yes, this is different to an emergency passport. An emergency passport is issued super fast, but it will only have enough validity to allow you to finish your trip. A replacement passport will have a full 10 year validity, but will take much longer to be issued. Ask your consulate about your options when you are completing your paperwork! It could save you A LOT of money.
