Packing can be hard at the best of times, but if you’re anything like me you probably leave everything to the last minute and run around in a daze the days before your trip. Shab is much better at getting organised but he always forgets something! This handy list is stuff that we can’t travel without, our must pack items if you will. They all have handy links so you can shop online and have them delivered to your doorstep well before you leave! If you’re from Australia, make sure you enter your address before shopping on Amazon- as some suppliers can’t ship to the land down under. You can always try EBAY Australia if you get stuck!
Note: This post contains affiliate links. This means if you purchase an item by clicking a link, we will receive a small commission, this helps us keep traveling and giving you great advice! Of course this doesn’t cost you guys a cent more. These are items we actually use and all opinions are our own- for real bro!
Yes you need travel insurance guys! Seriously, we hope you never have to use it, but traveling without it can be like gambling with your life. If something horrific happens and you don’t have insurance to cover your medical expenses you could end up in a dingy, unhygienic, grosse hospital instead of the good one down the road. So where do you start looking for insurance? There are websites that compare prices and coverage and these are a great place to start. We personally use World Nomads, they cover you for so many different activities (always read the fine print/PDS), and they make claiming relatively simple. We had to claim when I broke my arm snowboarding in Whistler in 2013, and everything went really smoothly. And thank god it did cos we were broke as fuck at the time haha.
The steripen is a mobile water sterilization device that removes bacteria and living organisms. It comes with a filter so you can grab water from the river, but we used it throughout Asia to reduce the amount of plastic we were going through. Think about it- you can’t drink the tap water, so you buy bottled water. Take a minute to think about it- you need to drink 2 liters a day at least. THAT’S A LOT OF PLASTIC OVER 6 MONTHS! I fell in love with the idea of the Steripen before our trip and searched high and low to find one in Perth! We eventually found it at Anaconda, but it ended up costing us about $120 AUD! The link below shows them for SO much cheaper. Dammit! Full disclosure: We don’t use this nearly as much as we should. And it’s pure laziness on our part. That is one con- you need to have patience as you cant drink the water instantly, it takes 30 seconds to purify 500mls of water. You also won’t have cold water unless you can pop your bottle in the fridge.
As bloggers that are heavily into photography and videography we can’t leave home without one each. Well we did once, and our computers nearly died because of it. If you’re traveling for a while and expect to be taking a few happy snaps or videos, you really should consider taking a hardrive or a usb storage devide to back up all your memories. Not only will it keep your phone ro computer running lightning fast- but it means you won’t lose all your data if something happens to your phone or lappy.
OMG. How did we live before these? These guys allow you to charge your phone or other gadgets whilst on the go- no more running out of battery as you’re frantically booking hotels, or right as you are taking that epic photo. Every traveller should have one! Mine is 9,000mAh and it will charge my Samsung phone from dead to 100% easily, and even has alittle juice left over that Sha can use if needed. 6,000mAh should be enough for one full charge ☺
I love these babies. We (and most others) always recommend rolling your clothes up to save space when packing. The only problem with this is that it can be hard to keep them from unrolling as you add them to your bag! That’s why you need packing cubes! These little guys give you compartments that keep your clothes rolled, and also help you organize your stuff. This means that you can put all your T-shirts in one so that you don’t have to risk all your pants unrolling when you just want one T-shirt! In this link there is a package of 5 cubes but I honestly think the large ones are useless. It is a damn good deal though so you could use those for storage at home or go and spend a little more money at your local store and just buy the small ones.
I seriously can’t survive a flight without lip balm. Everything gets so dry when you are cooped up in the cabin of an airplane. Avoid having dry, cracked lips in your holiday snaps and carry a nice moisturizing lip balm on your next flight. Bonus points for SPF for protection when you get off the flight! My favourite is Blistex as they are so super moisturizing- but I will use whatever is going if I have to!
I know, a bit weird. But did you know you are more likely to get sick when flying due to a combo of A: the recycled air that can be full of germs, and B: the fact that the dry air, dries out our nostrils, and when our noses are dry there is no barrier to keep us from absorbing all those nasties. Enter the trusty nasal spray! No more sickness for you my friend! Shab also gets cracked nostrils that are super painful- so this spray is a must when we travel.
Shhhhhhh! You’ll thank us when you’re old and you don’t have issues with varicose veins or worse, deep vein thrombosis. DVT is actually life threatening and can put a stop to you ever flying again. Say good-bye to those holiday plans!….. Unless you get yourself some flight socks that is! Yeahhhh you’ll see Me with my super sexy socks on for every flight. Don’t hate me cos you ain’t me ha-ha I paid about $50 AUD for mine so the ones in this link are a great deal!
Inflatable Neck Pillow:
Seriously, who lugs around a bean-bagy neck pillow these days? Does anyone remember traveling with an actual pillow? Geez! Now we have Inflatable neck pillows and they are the best things ever. What a time to be alive! They take up no space, are just as comfy as the old style- and you’re probably less likely to leave them behind in a fit of rage after they burst and start leaving a trail of white balls everywhere you go. The one in this link even has raised edges to stop your head rolling around- we’ve come a long way people! It also comes with ear plugs and an eye mask- these would have made it onto my list- but who needs spate items when you can get a handy package like that?
