We’ve just come back from a whirlwind trip to Bandung in West Java. Now, Bandung is Indonesia second biggest metro area, which means that your options are almost limitless! In this article in this post I’m going to tell you how to best spend 48 hours in Bandung with the least amount of stress and next to no traffic!
West Java is the area South and East of Jakarta on Java Island. The area is between 1300 to 2000 meters above sea level making it the coolest Indonesian city and a great place to escape from the heat of Jakarta.
If you need a break from city life, even just for a weekend, then I can tell you how to get away from it all by spending 48 hours in Bandung!
There are activities for the adrenalin junkies and the nature lovers.
First, to spend 48 hours in Bandung you need to get there!
The train from Gambir station in Jakarta is definitely the easiest and best value way to reach Bandung. There is no need to worry about traffic, you can relax and just take in the scenery throughout the 3-hour journey. You can also get the train to Bandung from Yogyakarta.
The domestic airport in Bandung provides the fastest way to get to Bandung if you don’t mind searching for a good deal on fares- fly to Husein Sastranegara airport.
We actually drove out to Trizara Resorts, and of course on the day we took the journey part of the highway was closed for maintenance. The drive is supposed to take 3 hours, maybe 4 with traffic. It ended up taking us 6 hours. This is definitely a good reason to opt for the train or a quick flight!
Where to stay:
You can have a look here for some options, but I can save you some time! I wholeheartedly recommend Trizara Resorts. Trizara is a glamping resort. I know, what the hell is ‘glamping’!? It’s ‘glamourous camping’ and its an amazing way to experience nature with a bit of luxury. Don’t worry Sha hadn’t heard of glamping before this trip either! To use a corny cliché- this is how you get back to basics and enjoy nature without sacrificing any mod cons!
It’s basically a perfect mesh of luxury and camping. You get a comfy bed with clean, pressed linen, a private, fully equipped bathroom, and even floorboards- all inside a giant waterproof tent. The mountain temperature averages between 17 to 27 degrees making life in the tents extremely comfortable with just a fan- no noisy air conditioning needed.
The resort is laid out down a large hill- meaning you get the most beautiful view of Bandung city and the mountains almost everywhere you look. You can literally hear the crickets and frogs all around you as you fall asleep in your comfortable bed. When you finally wake up from your amazing sleep you’ll hear the morning birds chirping too! You can even sleep with the tent open if you want to see the view from your bed, completely safe from any creepy crawlies thanks to the mosquito nets! Camping without any bugs- I know more than a few people who will only be camping in this way from now on!
If you only have 48 hours in Bandung then Trizara Resort can help you make the most of your time! We were lucky enough to be hosted by Trizara and we were even more lucky to enjoy an absolutely jam packed 2 days!
What to do in Badung:
You could easily spend your 48 hours in Bandung just exploring the extensive grounds of Trizara Resort. The owners have thought of everything, they have a delightful café and restaurant where you can enjoy anything from perfect latte’s to milkshakes. If you wanted something a little outdoorsier you can have them organise a picnic for you. There is a prime grass location under a tree with a view of the mountain that is perfect for this! They have a trampoline, a playground, a fire pit, a collection of board games to try and even a flying fox in progress! If you like to stay active, or want try something new the options don’t end there! From morning Yoga classes to Zumba, trail running to boxing classes and even bike hire Trizara Resorts have you covered for your exercise needs. So between exploring, eating and getting your exercise in you could easily entertain yourself for longer than 48 hours without even leaving the resort.
But….. that is pretty hard to do when there are so many fun activities outside the gates!
For something a little less aggressive, take a few of your 48 hours in Bandung unwinding on a hike into the surrounding hills. The Lembang area of Bandung is full of beautiful mist-soaked hills, many of them covered in beautiful tea plantations. There is a marked trail that leads you through pine forest and plantations up to a lovely viewpoint over Bandung. This trail is easily accessed from Trizara resort, why not ask them to pack you a picnic for the journey and make a day of exploring?
Tangkuban Perahu Volcano
This volcano is visible from parts of the Trizara property and it is possible to take a trip out to hike up to the three craters. This is a pretty epic adventure as you can even hike down into Kawa Domas crater, where there are geysers and they are hot enough to boil an egg! Kawah Ratu crater sometimes fills with poisonous gases and Kawah Upas is the active crater so these two are very much off limits! Indonesia is known as the country with the highest density of active volcanos and this is a great opportunity to get up close with an active volcano!
Four Wheel Driving.
This was hands-down our favourite activity of our 48 hours in Bandung! Ajags adventure is a local company that can pick you up from your hotel in Bandung and take you on an off-road adventure to remember. Trizara resorts again arranged everything for our group meaning we could relax right up until the moment we took off into the nearby Cikahuripan forest. Trees surrounded us as far as the eye could see; it is a really beautiful forest. I mean, Sha does say I have this weird thing with trees. But I just appreciate a good tree and a good forest even more! We were also taken past the tea plantations I mentioned above, as well as a slow drive past the viewpoint. We then really got into the fun stuff on the Sukawana off-road track. Both Sha and I weren’t really expecting to enjoy it as much as we did.
I don’t know why exactly, but we kinda have this thought about organized tours being a bit safe. Don’t get me wrong; we were definitely safe during the entire trip! It’s just that this 4x4 trip was much more extreme than we expected. The track takes you past cliffs, trees, and areas that have been carved out to just a little wider than the vehicles and much higher at some points. There were moments where we scraped and banged our way through these, and other times when we were sure we would have tipped over had those sides not been there.
When the trail opened up we were faced with mud. SO much mud! At one stage the bottom of our vehicle actually started to fill up with muddy water because it was so deep! It was a lot of fun and I’d definitely recommend asking Trizara to arrange this trip for you, or contact Ajags Adventure in Bandung yourself.
This is one you don’t have to go very far from the hotel for! Ajags Adventure will actually bring this activity to Trizara which is super handy if you have limited time, have a difficult group to organize, or if you’re feeling a little bit lazy!
You can practice your aim the old fashioned way by aiming at a target. This is very fun- so long as you check your arrows and don’t use the ONLY broken one. I ended up with a pretty good bruise because I was impatient and wanted to use the broken one. Ahaha
Once you’ve got your skills down pat, if you have a group you have the option to partake in an ARCHERY BATTLE! Yup. We donned body armor a secure facemask and we got to run around shooting each other! The team from Ajags set up a couple of inflatable barriers to hide behind, and some targets. The first team to shoot all the targets without being shot themselves is the winner of ALL DA GLORY!
Check out my little video off the back of Sha’s camera- I took it all pretty seriously- no wonder I hurt myself! Totally worth it though! I definitely want to have a go at archery again in the future!
For those of you who haven’t played a round of paint ball before, let me paint you a picture (pun intended haha). It is the closest that many of us will get to real life combat, and if you’re competitive like me, your adrenalin will be coursing through your body as you run, dodge, crawl and dive through the activity. It can hurt a little bit if you are hit, especially if it is at close range- but that’s why it’s fun!!
So there are actually quite a few paint ball courses in the hills around Trizara resorts. The other option is to have the paint ball brought to you! Yup the guys at Trizara can actually set up a mini course outside the resort so big groups and the time strapped can fit in a game or two. The great thing about this is that you can start to feel a bit important as you barely need to leave the comfort of your resort.
So there you have it. 48 hours in Bandung might not seem like very long, but if you plan it right and stay with the right people you can fit in A LOT of adventure and relaxation. The next time you need a quick getaway consider spending your 48 hours in Bandung at Trizara Resorts and have them take care of everything for you!
